Observatory is a reactive multimedia installation, first shown as part of Untitled Apocalypse at The Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC). Guests ascend stairs to a dome-like structure. A spotlight appears, and a voice asks guests to step into the light in order to hear something. From the top of the dome, a bright and blinding light shines projection to the scene below. Below, a projected figure appears and disappears in bed sheets, a tangle of glowing tubes where the mouth should be and a mouth where the chest should be. A sensor triggers one of many video clips describing observations of phenomena beyond our comprehension.
The installation is built from metal pipes, risers, plastic construction sheeting, and additional mixed media. Equipment includes a computer running the software Processing, a Kinect depth sensor, audio speakers, and a projector.
